Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Jonathan Klein as the first Executive Director of the Housing Development and Finance Committee (HDFC), bringing three decades of affordable housing finance experience to the state’s new housing framework.
Klein has led major lending and investment initiatives across the corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors, including more than $3.1 billion in affordable housing lending with zero losses.
His career spans senior public sector roles, leadership in the CDFI and banking sectors, and service on multiple housing and community development boards. Klein holds degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Harvard University’s Kennedy School, and the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Klein will guide HDFC as it works to streamline and modernize California’s multifamily affordable housing finance system.
